The production vehicle Toyota Mirai, running on hydrogen fuel cells, has reached the highest level of autonomy and has managed to cover a distance of more than 1000 km on a single refueling. The record for the mileage of a hydrogen car was set in France, where on May 26, driven by four drivers, the car covered the distance of 1003 km. According to experts Mirai has managed to cover the last 9 km literally in vapors.
The test drive was conducted on a standard Toyota Mirai sedan without any modifications and went on normal public roads. The distance traveled and the fuel consumption are registered by an independent certification body. Toyota Mirai consumes an average of 0.55 kg of hydrogen per 100 kilometers. When fully charged, the car can store 5.6 kg of hydrogen. The total charging time in a station with a pressure of 700 bar does not exceed 5 minutes.
The Toyota Mirai sedan has a rear-wheel drive and appeared in 2019. this is the second modification of the car. To achieve the record at a distance of 1003 km, drivers followed the style of “eco driving” without using special techniques that can not be used by ordinary drivers.
Whether the hydrogen car can compete with standard electric vehicles remains to be seen. Today, the hydrogen charging infrastructure is quite limited, the price of Toyota Mirai cars is high and amounts to approximately 64 thousand euros in Germany. Meanwhile, the electric cars can be charged at home, they are cheaper, and the network of charging stations is already quite developed around the world.
