Although Toyota was one of the pioneers of electrification, it jumped on the electromobility bandwagon later than most other competitors. However, it is now catching up and plans to launch six battery electric cars in Europe by 2026.
She revealed the smallest and at the same time the most affordable of them in the form of the Urban SUV concept, which premiered at the Kenshiki Forum conference in Brussels. At the same time, its production version should appear on European markets as early as 2024, so it might not be very far from the production form.
The electric crossover with a length of 4300 mm, a width of 1820 mm and a height of 1620 mm is aimed at the B-SUV segment, which according to Toyota will be one of the largest European markets for battery electric cars. After all, this segment is popular even now, and Toyota is represented in it by the Yaris Cross hybrid model, which should even be the best-selling car in this class.
Toyota Yaris Cross has been modernized, has a more powerful hybrid
It was the experience gained thanks to the Yaris Cross model that the Japanese automaker had to apply in the development of the purely electric crossover Urban SUV. It should therefore target the needs of European customers and, in addition, add the brand’s traditional versatility, quality, durability and reliability.
The car’s exterior follows the automaker’s modern design language, including the distinct light signature of the front and rear lights, which are connected across the width of the car. The front door handles are recessed, the rear door handles can be seen by the pillar.
The charging socket is on the left fender, the wheels have an aerodynamic design, and the rear is impressive with a prominent roof spoiler and an indicated diffuser in the bumper. Plastic fenders and door sills are also a matter of course.
The automaker did not show the interior, but it should offer a high position behind the wheel, which is in demand among those interested in SUVs. The cabin should be flexible and allow for easy modification to carry passengers or a larger volume of cargo.
Unlike a number of other electric crossovers, Toyota’s entry-level EV will be available with either single- or dual-wheel drive, but customers will also be able to choose from two battery sizes. They will thus be able to customize the car according to their needs (especially the required range) and possibilities (for example, financial).
We’ll learn more about Toyota’s smallest and most affordable electric model over the next year. However, it is worth remembering that even the European representative office of Toyota plans to offer vehicles with zero emissions by 2035 and even wants to achieve complete carbon neutrality by 2040.
