In recent years, the Japanese Toyota has become synonymous with hybrid drives, but it has not forgotten about amusement cars either. After the Supra and GR Yaris models, the new generation of the GR 86 arrives.

The first generation GT86 sports car was introduced in 2012 and has sold over 200,000 units worldwide. The new one is called GR 86 to fit more into the names of Gazoo Racing – the sports industry of the Japanese carmaker Toyota.
Unlike many other manufacturers, Toyota and Subaru have never hidden their sports cars GT86 a BRZ they are twins. And the partnership on the Toybar project continues in the new generation, which is a very pleasant surprise given the growing trend of electrification and the ever-tightening emission limits.

Completely painless though arrival of a new BRZ (it was introduced in advance last autumn) will not work. Subaru has a much narrower model line than the Toyota, and it is still unclear whether it can meet its emission limits well enough to be able to “afford” BRZ in European markets. A completely new electric car could become a rescue, thanks to which zero in the table of CO2 / km emissions, we could perhaps ride the “BRZem” in our region as well. Thanks to successful hybrids with lower table emissions, Toyota has a much simpler situation and here and there it can afford some fun bead like GR Yaris or just GR 86. You probably know where I’m going, we’ll see a new Toyota sports car here too!

The powertrain is identical to the Subaru. Under the hood, a flat atmospheric four-cylinder with a volume of 2.4 liters works, which has a maximum output of 173 kW (235 hp) at 7,000 rpm and a torque of 250 newton meters. So at least in the Japanese specification, which may differ slightly from the European one. Compared to its predecessor (two-liter, 147 kW), however, it will definitely improve.

The car can handle a hundred in 6.3 seconds and with a curb weight of 1270 kg, it should be the lightest four-seater coupe on the market. An aluminum roof or body panels, for example, help to achieve this value. Fans of a real sports ride will not be cheated by a six-speed manual transmission. But if anyone still wants to, they can pay extra in GR 86 for a six-speed slot machine.
The new product will go on sale in Japan in the autumn of this year, and should arrive in Europe a little later. We still have to wait for some time for the final details about “our” version.
