According to a study by Inovev, more than 32 million off-road cars will be sold worldwide in 2022. And contrary to what one might think, the manufacturer that sells the most such cars is not American, but Asian. This is Toyota with 3.2 million units sold last year or about 10% of global production.
Toyota’s record is largely due to the RAV4 model, which was the best-selling car last year (more than 1 million units according to Jato data) across all categories. Toyota is in first place and is well ahead of its competitors. Volkswagen – second in the ranking – is far behind with “only” 1.9 million SUVs sold (the Tiguan Allspace is the best seller ahead of the T-Roc).
After that, the differences are smaller: Hyundai with 1.8 million (thanks to Tucson), Honda with 1.5 million (thanks to CR-V), Kia with 1.4 million (thanks to Seltos not sold in Europe) and Ford again with 1.3 million (thanks to Kuga). Rounding out the top 10 are Nissan, Jeep, BMW and Chevrolet.
A leading Chinese manufacturer is BYD. It ranks 12th, behind Tesla (thanks to the Model Y) but ahead of Mercedes and Audi. By group, Toyota maintains the sales lead with 3.6 million SUVs sold globally last year (this along with its premium Lexus brand, which sold nearly 300,000 SUVs), ahead of Volkswagen Group (3.4 million) and Hyundai Motor Group (3.3 million).
The end of SUVs?
Over the past five years, sales of SUV models have increased on all continents. In Europe, their market share even reached 50% in 2022, compared to 23% in 2015. The risk of saturation cannot be ruled out, but Inovev does not believe in the impending death of SUVs. “Given the proposition developed by manufacturers, it is likely that the volume of SUVs will continue to increase in the short term worldwide,” the firm said, estimating that annual sales of SUVs could reach 35 million units worldwide. until 2025
