Toyota-Daihatsu RI Mass Recall Puzzle Finally Revealed!

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaA unit recall or recall for checking or replacing the fuel pump is currently affecting Japanese cars in Indonesia, especially Toyota and Daihatsu. It turns out that this recall step did not just appear, there was a series of previous events triggered by complaints from customers.

Executive Coordinator of the Technical Service Division of PT Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM), Bambang Supriyadi, explained the root of the problem. According to him, in the first half of 2019, Daihatsu received 24 consumer complaints that his car engine was dead or choked up.

From the results of the investigation, it was found that the case of the engine stagnation or stagnation was caused by the impeller inside the fuel pump expanding beyond the standard.

“The complaint is that the first customer has a dead engine and it is difficult to turn on. Usually there is a parking time, hot conditions or also waiting for a red light. So the speed is low, the engine is idle and it is difficult to turn on, it is necessary to wait 5-10 minutes. “Bambang said in a press conference virtually quoted from detikcom, Friday (19/3).

According to Bambang, the 26 micron change in the impeller is very small. Even when seen with the naked eye, there is no visible change. However, these small changes can make a car engine stall.

“Indeed, every part has a tolerance. When it is used, it is hot, for example, it expands, then there is a maximum tolerance. The impeller itself has a maximum tolerance of 19 microns, this is very small if we talk about microns, even if you look at it it will not be visible. We investigate it up to 26 microns. So the difference is only 7 microns. But it is 7 microns that makes it touch the cover. Very precise, so if we see it will not show the change in dimensions. But because the car components are very precise so it must be fixed to the cover. each and the relationship between the other components, “said Bambang.

This incident itself began when in June 2017 the fuel pump component supplier in Daihatsu cars made changes to the impeller raw material. With the same car production process and it has been proven that there are no problems, the change in raw material causes the impeller density to change.

“So when used, the condition is hot, this impeller can expand, touch (touch) with the motor pump cover, eventually stuck and unable to flow gasoline from the fuel tank to the combustion chamber,” said Bambang.

Bambang did not mention which company was the supplier of the problematic fuel pump components. He said the recall campaign was a form of Daihatsu’s responsibility to consumers.

In Indonesia, Toyota is recalling cars such as the FJ Cruiser produced in 2013-2014, Alphard for the 2017-2019 production year, the C-HR for the 2018-2019 production year, the Corolla for the 2018-2019 production year, the Camry for the 2019 production year, Voxy in the production year. 2018-2019, Kijang Innova production year 2017-2019, Fortuner production year 2017-2019, Hilux production year 2017-2019, Avanza production year 2017-2019, and Rush 2017-2019 production year. The total is 286,090 units.

Meanwhile, Daihatsu recalled a total of 97,290 cars. The details are 53,246 units of Great and Grand New Xenia from October 2017 to June 2019, 41,152 units of All New Daihatsu Terios from December 2017 to June 2019, and 2,892 units of all new Sirion from January 2018 to September 2019.
