Toxic chemicals spilled from a sunken Nazi ship in the North Sea

A new study reveals the remains of a German patrol boat that sank during World War II. It crossed the bubble due to the bombing and bombing of the British Royal Air Force.

Dangerous substances – toxic waste, heavy metals and even explosives – are released from the shipwreck at the bottom of the North Sea. This, in turn, leaves its mark on the surrounding ecosystem.

This study is part of the North Sea Wrecks project, which aims to investigate and highlight the pollution caused by ship and aircraft wrecks in the North Sea.

80 years ago, a Nazi convoy consisting of several warships and support ships was speeding along the English Channel. It was part of Operation Cerberus.

On February 12, 1942, the British Royal Air Force carried out an air raid near the Belgian coast, sinking the patrol boat “V-1302 John Mahn” and killing 12 crew members.

“John Mahn” now lies at a depth of about 35 meters. She still has unexploded depth charges on board, as well as a significant amount of other hazardous materials.

To better understand the impact of such a wreck on the seabed, a team of scientists led by Josephine van Landuit took samples in the vicinity of the wreck.
