In Cologne, more and more illegal parking lots are being hooked: In 2016 there were just over 13,000 cars, the number had risen to almost 22,000 by 2019. An increase of 68 percent!
The trend continues this year: By October 31, 2020, 17,200 cars had been towed away in the Cologne city area. Extrapolated, this results in a value of more than 20,000 cars that end up at a collection point for the current year.
There are several reasons for the increasing number! One is that a total of more cars were registered: At the end of 2018, according to the city, there were still 500 041. As of July 31, 2020, there were 7,913 more. “In addition, parking spaces have been built back in favor of new bike paths,” says ADAC traffic expert Roman Sutholt. “In addition, there has been an increasing number of reports from illegal parking vehicles via apps such as ‘Wegeheld’ and via the Internet from private individuals.”
And: The city has been taking action against so-called sidewalk parking for some time. According to a spokeswoman, there are no other special measures against illegal parking. It is really only towed when it is absolutely necessary.
Incidentally, the costs for all the trouble vary: depending on the towing company and the toll, between 189.02 and 258.22 euros are due (including the administration fee). In addition, there are between 9.28 and 10.44 euros per day parking costs at the towing company for the car …
