Los British tourists breathe a sigh of relief after learning that will be able to continue driving during their holidays in Spain with your UK driving licence. Those who move to Spain for work reasons or temporarily may also do so.
The measure affects British citizens who have been residing in Spain for more than 6 months
And it is that, since last Sunday, May 1, British citizens residing in Spain cannot drive with their UK license. The April 30 was the last day scheduled in the moratorium approved by the Government in 2020which extended the validity of driving licenses issued in British territory.
The process of leaving the United Kingdom from the European Union (EU), known as Brexit, has put an end to most of the community agreements that protected British citizens for their mobility through the EU countries. Now, being considered a “third country”, the driving license issued by the DVLA —Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency— is no longer valid for British citizens who have been residing in Spain for more than six months. People in this situation must obtain a Spanish driving license to be able to continue circulating on Spanish roads.
“An agreement has not yet been reached to validate UK driving licenses for Spanish licences. We have agreed to rapidly speed up talks and We urge the Spanish Government to present provisional measures“, declared a spokesman for the British Government to the newspaper The Sun.
