At least 2,862 people were killed and about the same number injured during the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco on September 8. But while Morocco struggles with a natural and humanitarian crisis, tourists continue to come to the hard-hit country hoping for a beautiful vacation. Even despite the fact that at the moment everyone is invited to evaluate the need to go to this North African country.

It has already been reported that on Friday, September 8, Morocco was shaken by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was located 70 kilometers southwest of Marrakech in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
Currently, the number of people killed in the earthquake has reached 2,862 and the number of injured is approximately the same. Morocco is dealing with the aftermath as it continues to clear the rubble, search for missing people and provide support to the victims.
In solidarity with the severely affected country, several international events were canceled, but tourists are invited to evaluate the need to go to Morocco now.
Currently, airports across the country, including Marrakech, are operating as usual. In addition, Marrakesh, Agadir and Savira are preparing for an active tourist season, which will begin in a month – in October. However, even now, groups of tourists arrive in the country every day, who, despite the earthquake, did not cancel their travel plans. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia invites travelers to carefully evaluate whether it is necessary to go to the region affected by the earthquake.
While rescue and earthquake prevention works are being carried out, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges you not to travel to Morocco at this time. Communication Group of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
When contacting “Riga” airport, we found out that there are no direct flights to Morocco in the summer season. Latvian tourism agencies and operators offering trips to Morocco also plan them only starting from October.
“Celiojumu bode” representative Santa Lapiņa “Delfi” says that the nearest trips to Morocco are planned only at the end of October. At this time, these trips have not been canceled and are all valid. She also emphasized that “Ceilojumu bode” is not a travel organizer, therefore it does not make a decision on the cancellation of a trip, it is done by the travel organizers – tour operators.
But travelers who want to go to Morocco right now despite the earthquake should definitely check with the hotel they plan to stay at to make sure it’s up and running. Although most hotels are currently working as usual, there are also those that have given their rooms to the victims of the earthquake.
You should also double-check the route of the planned trip, because it is definitely not recommended to go to the epicenter of the earthquake.
