Peru that’s no good. The protests that took place there became increasingly heated tourist suffer more.
The arrest of former president Pedro Castilo sparked long demonstrations in Peru. Peru is now in a state of emergency.
The ongoing demonstrations have decreased the food supply. Tourists who stay there are also displaced, especially those currently on the island Machu Picchu.
“We have asked the government to help us and establish helicopter flights to evacuate tourists,” said Darwin Baca, mayor of Machu Picchu.
However, with Peru’s state of emergency, helicopter assistance never arrived. Almost a week has passed, a total of 300 tourists trapped in Machu Picchu.
Quoted from CNN, Trains to and from Machu Picchu were stopped on Tuesday (6/12). Protesters hijack this train and sabotage it, tourists have no choice but to stay in Machu Picchu.
It was previously reported that these tourists were given a supply of eggs and coffee to make up for the food shortage. According to Baca, the situation could get worse because the local economy depends 100% on tourism.
It’s not just a matter of food, medical assistance is starting to be necessary for tourists. An American tourist was trapped there and is now running out of medicine.
“I’ve been there since Monday and now he and the other people with him are out of medicine,” said Michael Martucci, a US tourist who was also there.
Even worse, Machu Picchu lacks medical personnel.
“There were around 100 tourists in line and we waited 2 hours before seeing a doctor,” added Martucci.
