Tourist’s Experience: Crossing Bulgaria’s Vignette Problem and Fines

A tourist told on a holiday forum what problems she faced when crossing Bulgaria.

The woman told on August 30 on the Forum Thassos Facebook group that she received a fine from the Bulgarian Police because the vignette purchased from the authorities of the state south of the Danube had the wrong validity period, according to Ziare.com.

“Between 11-15.08.2023 I transited Bulgaria to Istanbul leaving Romania via Ruse. Bought the vignette on 11.08 in Ruse from the parking lot where everyone buys, from the roundabout.

At a check by the Bulgarian police near Veliko Tarnovo (being in transit again through Bulgaria, this time to Greece) I found that another validity period was written on the receipt, other than the week 11-17.08.2023 (on voucher validity period is 21-28.08.2023 – it is very vague at the moment).

Of course I got fined. Our luck was that we could prove with the paid receipt that we bought it on August 11th, so we would have received a much larger fine.

Other Romanian cars were also stopped near us with the same, similar problem. The vignette was paid for, the validity period is different from what it should have been”, she said.

The vignette can be purchased on the official website – bgtoll.bg.
