Tourists are finding their way back to Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium: more overnight stays than before corona

Last year, domestic and foreign tourists spent 42.7 million nights in hotels, bed and breakfasts, camping sites and so on. That is slightly more than in 2019, when 42.5 million overnight stays were counted.

In Denmark and the Netherlands, too, the number of tourist overnight stays was higher last year than in 2019: +12.3 percent and +3.9 percent respectively, according to Eurostat.

For the entire European Union, 2.72 billion overnight stays by tourists were recorded in 2022. That was almost twice as many as in 2020 and about half more than in 2012, but the number is still 5.6 percent below the level of 2019 ( 2.88 billion overnight stays).

Eurostat indicates that the figures came closer and closer to the pre-corona level throughout the year. For example, the number of tourist overnight stays in the EU was still 11 percent lower in the first half of 2022 than in 2019, but in the second half it was only 1.9 percent.
