Tourist killed and injured in a hot-air balloon accident in Cappadocia Turkiye

CAPPADOCIA, KOMPAS.com – Two Spanish tourists were killed and three injured on Tuesday morning when their hot air balloon landed hard in Cappadocia, Turkiye.

The balloon took off from the Avanos district at dawn on Tuesday (10/18/2022), according to the confirmation of the governor of Nevsehir province.

“During the landing of the hot air balloon carrying 28 passengers and two crew members, two Spanish citizens lost their lives, while three Spaniards were injured”, a statement read. Euronews.

“Treatment for the injured continues in our city hospitals and they are not life threatening,” he added.

The statement says the crash was caused by an unexpected increase in wind speed, according to a preliminary assessment.

How safe is a hot air balloon ride?

Balloon rides are one of the most popular activities in the Cappadocia region, where tourists are taken to fly over valleys and “fairy chimney” volcanic formations.

Deaths from these activities are very rare.

According to a recent review of data from the Turkiye Directorate General of Civil Aviation, between the summers of 2013 and 2017 in the Cappadocia region there were 12 accidents in the flight hours examined.

Three people lost their lives in this accident, which occurred during the landing phase of the flight.
