An eye witness said ABCthat he was swimming in a waterfall when he saw a crocodile appear on the surface.
“Everyone was screaming ‘crocodile’, ‘crocodile!’,” he said.
Victorian resident Will Johanson, was swimming with his five-year-old son. He said he didn’t know anyone was attacked.
“Suddenly we turned around and everyone was coming out of the water and pointing at us, sure enough there was a crocodile swimming near an old man,” he said.
The man lagged behind a little. With swift movements, the crocodile was ready to prey on the man. While running to land, the crocodile’s attack left wounds on his back and arms.
“We kind of got stuck on the other side of the pool, maybe me and half a dozen other people,” Johanson said.
A cop happens to be on holiday there, Taneka Starr. He helped the man get out of the water and administered first aid.
“We formed a circle together to make sure everyone made it out of the water safely, especially the children,” he said.
The authorities immediately evacuated and closed the waterfall. Rangers were seen setting traps for the crocodile and managed to catch it.
“It is estimated to be about two meters long,” said the head of the North Australian Department of Parks, Dean McAdam.
Wangi Waterfall itself has only been open for less than a month. This waterfall is usually closed during the rainy season because it is a habitat for saltwater crocodiles when the river is flooded.
