Tourist arrivals to the country had an annual growth of 6.24%: Inegi

Mexico received 21.8 million international tourists (travelers residing abroad who stayed overnight in the country) during the first half of 2024, which represented an annual growth of 6.24 percent, and reached a total expenditure of 17,578 million dollars, 7.70 percent more than in the first half of last year, revealed figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The International Travelers Survey (Evi), released this morning by Inegi, estimated that the number of international tourists in the country registered a decrease of 1.07 percent compared to the first half of 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, when 22 million international tourists visited at that time.

Meanwhile, compared to before the health crisis, total spending increased by 34.62 percent, as in the first half of 2019 spending amounted to 13.01 million dollars.

By the end of June 2024, the number of inbound tourists, tourists residing abroad who visit Mexico, cross the border and spend at least one night in a destination in the country, totaled 14.06 million, a number that represented an annual growth of 3.32 percent.

While total spending by international investors was 15,444 million dollars, 6.55 percent more than in the first half of 2023; and 36.51 percent more than in the same period in 2019 (11,313 million dollars).

Mexico received 3 million 697 thousand 844 international tourists in June 2024. In the same month a year earlier, an entry of 3 million 591 thousand 910 tourists was reported.

Last June, the number of inbound tourists totaled 2,277,262, representing a 1.6 percent annual drop. Those who entered by air accounted for 83.6 percent of inbound tourists: they increased by 0.1 percent annually. 373,883 entered by land (representing 16.4 percent): a number that decreased by 9.8 percent compared to June 2023.

Spending by international tourists reached 2,364.5 million dollars. Of these, 93.1 percent came from inbound tourists and 6.9 percent from cross-border tourists.
