The fall triggered a rescue operation launched by the semi-military Carabinieri police.
The 23-year-old, his family and two other tourists who chose the same path were later reported for having broken the barrier.
Located outside Naples, Mount Vesuvius is the only active volcano on the European mainland.
The volcano has had several minor eruptions in the last hundred years, but is probably best known for the eruption that destroyed the Roman city of Pompeii in the year 79.
