Tourism: Tourism industry approaches pre-Corona record numbers

After severe setbacks in the Corona pandemic, Saxony’s tourism industry is approaching its former record figures, but continues to struggle with problems. From January to July, the number of guest arrivals rose by 3.2 percent and the number of overnight stays by 1.9 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU) spoke of a “reason to celebrate”. The industry has now almost reached the figures of the record year 2019. World Tourism Day is being celebrated this Friday.

The sector has also seen an increase in the number of employees. In 2023, it had around 93,200 employees, according to the State Statistical Office. This is an increase of 2,100 people or 2.4 percent compared to the previous year. This means that the increase was greater than in the Saxon economy as a whole (0.4 percent).

Industry struggles with rising costs and staff shortages

According to Klepsch, however, the tourism industry continues to face major challenges. She pointed to rising costs, the burden of bureaucracy and a lack of staff. Saxony continues to focus on combining nature and culture in tourism, explained the minister. She referred to Chemnitz’s program as the European Capital of Culture in 2025.
