Tourism in Baden-Württemberg suffered severely from the consequences of the pandemic in the second year of Corona. Although the number of overnight stays in the country increased by 4.1 percent to 35.6 million in 2021 compared to 2020, the pre-crisis level is still a long way off. In its previous record year 2019, the tourism industry recorded 57 million overnight stays.
Among the urban and rural districts in southern Baden, the Ortenau district recorded the strongest growth with 15.7 percent more overnight stays in 2021 compared to 2020. It was followed by the city of Freiburg (plus 12.2 percent), the district of Emmendingen (plus 9.4 percent) and the District of Waldshut (plus 2.8 percent). In contrast, the district of Lörrach (minus 0.6 percent) and the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald (minus 2.3 percent), which is heavily influenced by tourism, experienced declines during this period.
Due to the pandemic, the hotels were closed at the beginning of 2021 and the ski lifts were not in operation, and the winter season did not take place. The Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Patrick Rapp (CDU), responsible for tourism, said: “The year 2021 was still heavily influenced by the crisis for tourism. Unfortunately, that was to be expected.” He continues to see great reluctance among foreign guests. On the other hand, increasing arrivals of domestic guests “show us that Baden-Württemberg is still an attractive and safe travel destination”.
