Tourism: anti-Covid barrier gestures are hampering recovery

The spread of the virus has continued at a “low to very low” level since the beginning of March 2022, but the conditions for entering the national territory are still costly and dissuasive for tourists, thus zapping efforts for a real recovery. touristic.

Take off your masks! Like many countries, Morocco has managed to neutralize the threat posed by Covid-19. The current epidemiological situation is characterized, in fact, by “a continuous decline in the transmission of the virus in the various regions of the Kingdom”, already indicated, at the beginning of last week, Mouad Mrabet, coordinator of the National Center for Emergency Operations of Public Health at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

During a meeting in Rabat with the press, devoted to the presentation of the monthly report on the epidemiological situation (April 13 / May 10, 2022), Mrabet noted that the spread of the virus was continuing at a “low to very low” level during this third intermediate period which continues for the tenth consecutive week, since the beginning of March 2022.

A spread of the virus “weak to very weak”

The latest figures on the epidemiological situation confirm this downward trend. Thus, a total of 97 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus (Covid-19) and 36 recoveries have been recorded in Morocco in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection said Thursday, which does not report no new deaths.

In its daily bulletin on the epidemiological situation, the ministry also specified that the number of first-timers reached 24,814,712, that of people who received two doses amounted to 23,294,243, while 6,308,475 people received three injections.

The new infection toll brings the total number of contaminations since the first case reported in the Kingdom on March 2, 2020 to 1,165,552, while the number of recovered people has risen to 1,148,964, i.e. a recovery rate of 98. .6%.

Only here, if all the indicators show that the threat of Covid-19 is largely fading, certain barrier gestures still have tough skin. If in everyday life, the practices in vogue at the height of Covid-19, such as washing your hands, coughing and sneezing into your elbow, using a single-use tissue, wearing a disposable or washable mask, do not are more topical for entering and leaving the national territory, it is a rigid health protocol that applies to travelers, especially for foreign tourists wishing to visit Morocco.

They are always asked for a PCR test and a Vaccine Pass as in the days of heavy coronavirus contamination. Enough to exasperate tourist operators! “A complicated, expensive and dissuasive device”, regrets Wissal El Gharbaoui.

A loss of 50% of potential for recovering market share

According to the secretary general of the National Confederation of Tourism (CNT), who corroborates the remarks made by the president of the CNT, Hamid Bentahar, during his appearance on L’invité des ÉCOs last month, if there is Instead of welcoming the rate of tourist arrivals since the reopening of air borders, the current access conditions for travelers are causing Morocco to lose 50% of its potential for recovering its natural market shares, in a context of strong reconquest, while global demand is on the rise.

“Morocco must take measures quickly so that we can regain our natural market shares,” recommends El Gharbaoui before insisting on the need to rebuild a sector hard hit by two years of health and economic crisis.

In reality, the Kingdom’s posture is in contradiction with its revival ambitions. If the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) and the CNT are multiplying initiatives to initiate the revival of the tourism sector in 2022, the barrier gestures in force at the airport level only benefit the competition, which is content with only the one or other of the measures. At the same time, it is difficult to prove the Executive wrong in view of the rebounds in contamination recorded in certain countries, in particular in China and the USA.

China, in particular, is currently dealing with a surge in Covid-19 infections, mainly in Beijing, the capital, and Shanghai, the country’s financial hub. In both metropolises, strict restrictions are implemented as part of the so-called national zero-tolerance strategy.

It should also be noted that the United States crossed, on May 12, the symbolic threshold of one million deaths. The White House called for “not to give in to complacency and to maintain a strong political will”, on the sidelines of a virtual international summit devoted to Covid-19, which led, on Thursday, to new financial commitments for more than $3 billion.
