Tourism and Development: The Potential of Barra de Potosí and Riviera Acapulco-San Marcos

Mexico City / 10/14/2023 00:46:48

Tropical Storm Max made landfall in one of the most beautiful places on the Costa Grande: Barra de Potosí, a small bay charming for its natural beauty belonging to the municipality of Petatlán, a place where “Papa Chuy”, or Father Jesus, is worshiped. of Petatlán, which thousands of pilgrims venerate every August 6.

There where my friend “Nayito” prepares the best seafood in the region and where my friend Miguel Limón Rojas fell in love with this paradise and decided to build his summer house.

This beautiful place fortunately did not suffer any damage, it is located just 15 minutes from the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo airport, and has enormous potential to trigger a major tourist development, a project in which the Marriott company has shown special interest.

For this reason, we have held some meetings with its directors, together with the dynamic mayor of this place, Javier Aguilar, better known as “Tocumbo”.

As a result of the damage caused by Storm Max, I contacted some authorities in the region, including the mayor of Petatlán, due to the special appreciation I have for him.

To Javier I expressed my solidarity in these gray days for my countrymen of Costa Grande.

—How are things there, my dear president? -I told.

“Well, look, fortunately we haven’t had any human losses, thank God,” he answered.

—And material damage?

—Well, yes, we have homes and roads in the Sierra affected, and the federal highway is closed.

The “Tocumbo”, who is very forward-thinking, tells me: “I have punctually attended to all the needs of the people of my town and I have not received any support.”

-As? -I answered.

-Well no.

—From the federal government?

-Anything.

—From the state government?

-Neither.

—I understand you (I told him). Look, I had to face the worst tragedies of our state, such as Paulina and Ingrid and Manuel, in my two administrations.

To encourage him, I told him: “it’s probably a matter of paperwork.” And that’s when he reminded me of the famous Fonden.

With the elimination of Fonden, states and municipalities have lost an important source of financing for disaster relief.

This has generated greater budgetary pressure on them, since they must allocate their own resources to address the damage.

Although Fonden was eliminated, the federal government has implemented other programs and funds for disaster relief.

The Treasury, through the National Civil Protection Coordination, is the entity in charge of allocating funds in the event of natural disasters.

It is a procedure similar to the previous one, which involves assessing damage and declaring an emergency. The problem is that the procedure is not very clear.

From the anecdote

This week I met with my friend Eduardo Sánchez Navarro, who confirmed that in a couple of months, work will begin on the first ecological hotel on the Acapulco-San Marcos Riviera, which will have 30 rooms in the first stage, out of a total of 100.

Great news that will change the face of the economy of our beloved Costa Chica, because I am certain that with this investment, others will be detonated along our 125 kilometers of natural beauty.

Lush vegetation, adventure, ecology, mangroves, lagoon and a splendid and virgin sea, which tourists will be able to enjoy in less than a year, the period in which the project is expected to be completed.

I also congratulate a great mayor: Tomás Hernández Palma, for his tenacity and fight to make the new tourist development of Guerrero a reality: Riviera Acapulco-San Marcos.
