Vacation in times of Corona: Only a good every or every third German was on the road last year. And if so, then mostly in your own country. This is the result of the tourism analysis of the Hamburg Foundation for Future Issues.
Of the 3,000 adults who were surveyed, a good half did not miss traveling in the previous year. And those who went on vacation – 40 percent less than in 2019 – were on average shorter: not even ten days.
Hamburg as a destination on par with France
As was the case most recently in the 1970s, every or every second holiday destination was within Germany. Bavaria, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg were able to double their market shares. And just as many Germans spent their holidays in Hamburg last year as in France. If you wanted to go abroad, you went to Austria, Italy and Spain – like in the 1970s.
The main reasons for choosing the destination were a short journey and the possibility of reaching the holiday destination with your own car. According to the survey, long-distance trips outside of Europe hardly ever took place.
Every second person wants to travel this year
This year, almost half of those surveyed are planning to travel. “Safety was, is and will remain the basic requirement when traveling”, says Ulrich Reinhardt, scientific director of the study. 78 percent of those questioned believe that a feeling of insecurity will remain for the time being. Nevertheless, everyone or one in five would like to pack their suitcases several times.
