Tourism: 30 million tourists in 2023 in Greece, according to the Central Bank – Revenues at 20.6 billion – 2024-05-01 16:08:29

20.6 billion euros touched the revenues from tourism in 2023 according to the final data of the Bank of Greece, showing an increase of 16.5% compared to 2022.

This development is due to the 11.6% increase in receipts from residents of the EU 27 countries, which amounted to 11.169 billion euros, representing 54.2% of all receipts, as well as the increase of 18.3 % of receipts from residents of other countries, which amounted to 8.6 billion euros.

The increased revenue reflects a 20.8% increase in inbound tourism as the number of tourists visiting our country in 2023 reached 30.08 million compared to 29,875 million travelers in 2022.

In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 12.7% and that through road border stations by 34.9%. The EU 27 countries contributed to the formation of travel traffic, with a participation rate of 54.4%, and the other countries, with a rate of 36.3%. In 2023, travel traffic from the EU 27 countries increased by 15.6% compared to 2022. This development was driven by an 11.3% increase in travel traffic from the euro area countries, which stood at 12.9 million travelers, as well as a 24.7% increase from EU27 countries outside the euro area, which amounted to 6.7 million travelers.

Finally, travel traffic from other countries showed an increase of 20.8% and amounted to 13 million travelers. In particular, travel traffic from the United Kingdom increased by 2.4%, reaching 4.5 million travelers. Travel traffic from the USA increased by 29.2% to 1.4 million travelers, while that from Russia decreased by 1.0% to 35.7 thousand travelers.

In terms of cruise revenue in 2023, total receipts from cruise passengers increased by 84.1%, compared to 2022, and reached €908.4 million. 5,152 cruise ship arrivals were recorded (2022: 4,598 arrivals). Total non-cruise ship overnight stays increased in 2023 by 121.5% compared to 2022 and amounted to 9.4 million overnight stays, positively affecting the formation of cruise receipts. Total cruise passengers are estimated at 3.4 million, showing an increase of 61.1%.

The main port in terms of cruise receipts is Piraeus, with a share of 47.8% of the total. They are followed by the port of Corfu and the port of Santorini with 13.3% and 8.5% of receipts, respectively.

It is noted that according to the final data, in 2023 the surplus of the travel balance reached 18.1 billion euros, against a surplus of 15.7 billion euros in 2022, marking an increase of 15.3%. This development is due to the greater increase in travel receipts (by 2.9 billion euros or 16.5%) than that of travel payments (by 507.0 million euros or 26.3%).
