sport">Our columnists Erik Breukink and Michael Boogerd follow the Tour de France closely. Every day, one of the two former participants in the largest cycling spectacle in the world looks ahead to the day to come. Today Boogerd, who won two stages and finished fifth in the 1998 Tour, sheds light on the 20th stage, a time trial.
Stage 20: Libourne – Saint-Émilion 30.8 km (tijdrit)
sport">Where the decisive time trial of the Tour de France turned out to be a thriller last year, when Tadej Pogacar dethroned jersey wearer Primoz Roglic in extremis, we don’t have to take a stunt into account this time.
sport">The lead of the unapproachable Pogacar on number two Jonas Vingegaard is life-size and is no less than 5.45. In addition, the Slovenian of UAE-Team Emirates was unapproachable in the first time trial of this Tour. Vingegaard, Jumbo-Visma’s forward pawn after the loss of Primoz Roglic, then finished third. On a course of 27 kilometers, the Dane gave exactly 27 seconds.
sport">On Saturday, the riders have to cover three kilometers more, thirty in total. The roads between Libourne and Saint-Émilion are almost flat. Given their form, Pogacar and Vingegaard are considered possible contenders for the stage victory, although Stefan Küng cannot be ruled out. The Swiss is looking for revenge. The European time trial champion was on the hot seat for a long time on day five, but was referred to second place by Pogacar at the end of the stage. “I think Küng is looking for revenge, yes,” said Boogerd.

sport">“The course is as good as flat, so it will be a fast time trial and then the specialists have an advantage,” says Boogerd, who nevertheless does not dare to eliminate Pogacar.
sport">“During such a time trial at the end of a big lap you often see the men in shape at the front. On the other hand, it is more difficult for them to go deep mentally again. Vingegaard did well in the first time trial, but it seemed to be pretty broken on Thursday at Luz Ardiden.”

Wilco Kelderman
sport">Boogerd is counting on Wilco Kelderman to move up a spot and take the fourth place in the general classification from Ben O’Connor. The difference between the two is currently 32 seconds. In the first time trial, Kelderman was seven seconds faster than the Australian.
sport">,,But I expect Wilco to come out better this time. He did well in the remainder of the Tour. For the rest, the classification seems to be made and on Saturday it is mainly about the stage victory.”
