Maximilian Schachmann also demonstrated his good early form on the 2nd stage of the Tour of the Basque Country and made up ground in the overall lead. Primoz Roglic is still in the lead, with Alex Aranburu taking the day’s victory.

Schachmann successfully defended his good position in the overall ranking of the Tour of the Basque Country. The 27-year-old from the Bora-hansgrohe team crossed the finish line on Tuesday on the second stage with the favorites group in seventh place and improved to sixth in the classification. The day win on the 155-kilometer section from Zalla to Sestao went to the Spaniard Alex Aranburu. In the overall standings, Tour runner-up Primoz Roglic is still in the lead. The Slovenian had won the opening time trial.
Schachmann had attacked La Asturiana about 18 kilometers from the finish on the last poisonous climb with Roglic. The outliers were made in the descent, however, after which Aranburu set his ultimately successful counterattack. “I thought on the ascent, I’ll just give it a try. It was very slippery on the descent, so I drove carefully,” said Schachmann at Eurosport.
There are a total of six stages on the racing program for the top-class tour up to Saturday. Most of the sections are rather hilly, the 111.9 kilometer long final stage from Ondarroa to Eibar being the most difficult. Roglic is considered the favorite for the overall win.
