Tour ends in bad luck, cable car breaks up in Italy, kills 14 people

The spokesman for the National Alpine Speleological Rescue Corps, who led the rescue operation, revealed that suddenly, the cable car fell into a forested area.

Authorities believe 15 passengers were aboard the cable car at the time of the accident, with officials earlier saying two children were among those initially survived with injuries.

“One of the two children who were transported by helicopter to the Turin hospital did not make it. Unfortunately, now the death toll today is 14,” tweeted the National Alpine Speleological Rescue Corps on Sunday evening local time.

The other child is still in critical condition, according to rescue groups.

Italy’s national fire brigade posted a photo of the crash site on social media, showing first responders circling the cable car near a tree in damaged condition and a broken cable.

A fire department spokesman said the death toll could rise.

The accident occurred when the cable broke just as the cable car was completing the 20-minute journey from Lido di Stresa piazza on Lake Maggiore to Mottarone station, about 1,491 meters above sea level at the top of the mountain.

The cable broke 300 meters from the top of the mountain, according to local ANSA media. The hanging rail then crashed into a forest area without direct road access.

The helicopter lowers mountain rescue workers to the crash site and picks up the victims.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi expressed his sympathy to the loved ones of the deceased in his statement Sunday.

“I learn with deep sadness the news of the tragic Stresa-Mottarone cable car accident. I extend my condolences on behalf of the entire government to the families of the victims, with special thoughts for the severely injured children and their families,” the statement said.

He added that he continues to receive continuous updates on the situation from Minister for Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility Enrico Giovannini and local authorities.

European Council President Charles Michel offered his condolences in a post on Twitter.

“Europe mourns you,” he said.
