Spain’s Jonathan Castroviejo (Ineos Grenadiers) finished in second place with a 22-second deficit, his compatriot Carlos Verona from Movistar (+26 s) sprinted to the finish line of the 193 km long stage from Aigle to Chatel Les Portes du Soleil. Slovenian Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) kept the yellow jersey for the leader of the overall classification.

Slovak Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies) did not fight for the leading positions in the first Alpine stage of this year’s race itinerary, with a loss of 27:35 minutes to the winner, he occupied the 120th position. In the overall ranking, Sagan is in 121st place (+1:08:20 h).

Sunday’s track passed almost exclusively through the territory of Switzerland, until the final kilometers took place in France. Right from the start, there was a battle for escape, in the first hour the cyclists set a fast pace. Pedersen, Barguil, Pinot, Neilands and Mollema attacked one after the other, the Ineos team was also very active. Already 150 km before the finish line, a large group including Sagan remained behind the peloton.

Finally, a huge group broke away from the peloton. Its member was also the sixteenth man in the overall classification, Uran, who was fond of the yellow jersey. Additionally, McNulty and Van Aert attacked, who, together with a quartet of other competitors, managed to complete the 21-member leading group. In the sprint premium, Van Aert had no competitor and scored the maximum point gain. In the competition for the green jersey, he already had almost double the points of the second Jakobsen.

During the climb to the Col des Mosses, the first cyclists fell from the peloton. Otherwise, nothing interesting happened on the hill, Latour won the sprint by five points for the premium. At the start of the climb to the Col de la Croix, O’Connor dropped out of the main field, took 10 points from Geschke on the bonus and stripped Cort Nielsen of the dotted jersey after eight days in the virtual classification.

Around 63 km before the finish, Jungels stepped in and the breakout began to tear. The Luxembourger was attacking for the stage triumph, 30 km before the tape he had a lead of 1:30 on the rest of the escape and already three minutes on the peloton. Only Bennett and Majka remained in it with Pogačar. Pinot, Castroviejo, Uran and Verona attacked from the remnants of the escape.

The strongest of them was Pinot, who separated from the rest of the field and began to pull away from Jungels’ lead. The Luxembourger almost put on the polka dot jersey, but Geschke was finally able to pass the bonus in fifth place and defend it.

However, the stage triumph fell to Jungels, who recorded his 25th career stage win and his second Grand Tour victory. In the end, the pair of Spaniards Castroviejo – Verona got ahead of the “broken” Pinot. Pogačar sprinted to the finish line with Vingegaard on the back wheel and maintained a 39-second advantage over him in the classification.

“It’s hard for me to find the words. I had big health problems last year, but I managed to come back and at the moment I feel great. I tried it for a long break because that’s how I can win. It reminded me a lot of my triumph in Liége – Bastogne – Liége. Even then, the rivals were closing in on me, just like Pinot is today, but I knew that if I could handle the last hill with a lead, I would win. After the descent, I went at maximum speed to keep the lead. Today is one from the most beautiful days in my career,” said Jungels in the first interview for Eurosport.

On Monday, the competitors will enjoy the second day off in a row in this year’s itinerary, on Tuesday the 148.1 km long stage from Morzine to Megeve awaits them.
