NEW YORK — Several people were injured, at least one of them seriously, when their tour bus was involved in a rollover accident on a highway about an hour north of Albany, New York, on Friday, according to the office of the governor.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said the crash on I-87 between Warrensburg and Lake George occurred early in the afternoon. It is unclear what caused the accident. One person was said to have been airlifted to a hospital.
Local officials estimated there were around 20 injuries, but the extent of those injuries was unknown.
New York State Police and Department of Transportation crews responded to the crash and were conducting rescue operations, Hochul said. Southbound I-87 is closed between exits 23 and 22 to assist in their efforts.
Video from the scene shows an intense emergency response. The tourist bus appears to have turned on its side on one of the shoulders of the road, while teams move stretchers and debris through the closed lanes.
The road closures are expected to last for some time.
“I join the people of New York in praying for the well-being of everyone involved in this horrific incident and am deeply grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders,” said Hochul, a Democrat.
New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, also a Democrat, echoed those sentiments and said he was “praying for everyone involved.”
It was unclear how many people were on the bus or where they were going. No injury information or other details about the circumstances of the crash were immediately available.
