The regular season of the French rugby championship gave its verdict last weekend after a final day as indecisive as the whole exercise. Castres (1st) and Montpellier (2nd) are directly qualified for the semi-finals. Union Bordeaux-Bègles (3rd), Stade Toulousain (4th), La Rochelle (5th) and Racing 92 (6th) have obtained their ticket for the play-offs which will make it possible to determine the identity of the clubs which will join the two first. As stipulated by the rules, the fourth takes on the fifth and the third challenges the sixth, with the highest ranked playing at home. The two posters of these dams are therefore Toulouse / La Rochelle which will be disputed on the lawn of the Ernest-Wallon stadium and Bordeaux-Bègles / Racing 92 which will be held at the Chaban-Delmas stadium, in Bordeaux.
Toulouse/La Rochelle: a play-off that looks like a final
The two teams meet…again! Last year, Stade Toulousain first won the European Cup final before dominating the Maritimes again, at the Stade de France, in the championship final. This season, Ugo Mola’s group has paid a heavy price for the absence of its internationals who have left to win the Six Nations Tournament and the Grand Slam with the French team: six consecutive defeats in the league, the worst series in the history of the club. It even took until the 26th day of the regular season for the defending champions to win their ticket to the final phase and this play-off. For their part, Grégory Alldritt and his partners from La Rochelle lifted the European Cup after their victory against Leinster, in Marseille, at the end of May. A few days later and after a qualification also obtained on the final day, La Rochelle hopes, on the occasion of this gala poster, to demonstrate that the domination of the Rouge et Noir is now a thing of the past.
Bordeaux-Bègles / Racing 92: the UBB must go beyond its frustration
Semi-finalist last year, the UBB certainly harbors some regrets before the kick-off of its match against Racing 92. Indeed, the defeat recorded in Perpignan (22-15) during the last day, did not did not allow Christophe Urios’ men to finish among the first two of the season. Third, they must therefore compete in a jump-off, which is always perilous. In front of their supporters at the Chaban-Delmas stadium, Matthieu Jalibert and his partners from Bordeaux-Bègles must therefore dismiss Racing 92 (6th) to once again reach the last four. On their way, the Racingmen therefore, also semi-finalists last year and used to high-stakes matches. Even at home, the task of the Girondins does not seem the easiest.
