May 9, Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe. This is the date of the historic speech by Robert Schuman, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, considered the birth certificate of the European Union.

Toulouse Métropole is celebrating this event by organizing the “Week of Europe”, which, over time, has stretched over a fortnight which is part of the Joli Mois de l’Europe.

Europe week opens with the exhibition “Porto beyond borders” by the Vertige collective, which continues its exploration of European cities with a personal and unique perspective. This year, it is Porto, a city located in the north of a southern European country, Portugal, that the public will be able to discover on the gates of the Jardin Raymond VI from May 9 to 31.

Between May 18 and 27, another highlight of this spring will be devoted to a universal theme, the table! Four associations (Le Goethe-Institut, Dante Alighieri Toulouse, Alliance Française and Instituto Cervantes Toulouse) offer to discover the diversity of European cultures through “Europe at the table”: A round table, a workshop pastry and two films will be shown will be devoted to it.

Depending on the evolution of the health crisis, the round table and the pastry workshop could be held by videoconference and the films broadcast online.

Still on the theme of the table, a menu in European colors will be served to children in the school canteens of primary schools, from May 24 to 29.

We can also follow videoconferences on the Bauhaus, a school founded in Germany, which played a leading role in the field of modern architecture and the birth of design, or visit Brussels and discover the diversity of its heritage, from the Middle -Age of Art Nouveau via Baroque, at a distance:
– “Le Bauhaus” – Monday May 17 from 6.30 pm> to 8 pm, with the Zoom application
Reservation required: [email protected]
– “Visit Brussels” – Tuesday 25 May at 6.30 p.m., with the Zoom application
Registration in advance: [email protected]

This year, due to the health crisis, “Europe Week” will continue beyond May with labeled events until December in order to organize meetings when the health situation will be more favorable. . Thus, on October 14 and 15, the school days “Discovering Europe on the Piste des Géants” will take place at l’Envol des pionniers and at the Halle de la Machine. 400 young schoolchildren from Toulouse Métropole will be able to participate in cultural activities in these two emblematic places.

Finally, many events are taking place in several cities of the Metropolis and the opening concert initially scheduled for May 9 with the Franco-Hungarian Association will turn into a closing concert as soon as the health situation allows.
