Toulouse. Demography: ever more numerous in Haute-Garonne

the essential
The demography of Haute-Garonne is still very dynamic thanks in particular to a migratory surplus. Each year, the department gains nearly 16,000 inhabitants. It is by far the most populous in Occitania. We are nearly 1.4 million …

Also attractive to rural communities

Outside these areas, 1,171 Haut-Garonnais live in a commune which depends on an area in another department. Thus, in Comminges, two municipalities depend on the area of Saint-Girons in Ariège and three municipalities depend on that of Lannemezan in the Hautes-Pyrénées. These municipalities have a slightly growing population between 2013 and 2018. Unlike the group formed by the 93 municipalities located outside the catchment areas of the cities, an area which hosts 23,203 inhabitants.

Always more numerous!

Good news at last ! According to the latest statistics from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), people are born more than they die each year in the Haute-Garonne department, which, as a bonus, always attracts more newcomers. thanks to its economic dynamism. With 1,380,672 inhabitants recorded on January 1, 2018, Haute-Garonne is the most populous department in Occitanie, the thirteenth department in France and the seventh in the provinces. It is placed a little behind the Val-de-Marne but in front of the Essonne. After Toulouse, the four main municipalities of the department are located in its suburbs: Colomiers, Tournefeuille, Blagnac and Muret. The urban unit (agglomeration) of Toulouse exceeds one million inhabitants. That of Saint-Gaudens, second in the department, points to 16,090 inhabitants.

A star-shaped demographic growth

This demographic dynamic is explained by a migratory surplus, the difference between those who arrive and those who leave (+ 0.7% per year), accompanied by a natural surplus, the difference between deaths and births (+ 0 , 5%). Each year, the department gains about 16,000 inhabitants, which is the equivalent of the town of Balma. Population growth is particularly important west of Toulouse, as far as the Gers. It also remains strong between Toulouse and Montauban, and in the south of Toulouse around Muret and Auterive. Population development is rather limited in the southwest of the department, around Saint-Gaudens, while the Luchon valley is experiencing a demographic decline.

Between 2013 and 2018, the main agglomerations became denser and that of Toulouse strongly contributed to this increase, around 65,000 inhabitants more over five years, or 80% of the development of the department. Two other urban units are very dynamic: those ofAuterive and of Venerque, thanks to slightly positive natural balances, accompanied by strong migratory surpluses. On the other hand, the agglomerations of Saint-Gaudens and of Revel have negative natural balances respectively – 0.4% and – 0.5% per year. The population increases in these two urban units only thanks to the relocations.

The fact remains that the growth observed in the department during the last five years evaluated slows down very slightly compared to the period 2008-2013, when it was + 1.3% per year. With a natural surplus which goes from + 0.6% to + 0.5% while the migratory surplus remains stable at + 0.7%. But the dynamic is accelerating in Toulouse city, as is also the case in Tournefeuille, Plaisance-du-Touch or Cugnaux. In contrast, the cities of Balma, Ramonville-Saint-Agne, Colomiers and Muret experience slower growth than in the previous period. A little slack that will not reverse the trend … the (demographic) future belongs to us.

Numbers

With 1,380,672 inhabitants on January 1, 2018, the population of Haute-Garonne has increased sharply in 5 years (+ 1.2% per year), a rate close to that of the previous five years (+ 1.3%). All this thanks to a natural surplus (+ 0.5%) which accompanies the migratory surplus (+ 0.7%). The demographic growth is strongest in Toulouse and in its suburbs (80% of the evolution of the department). The urban units of Saint-Gaudens and Revel show a natural deficit, but they gain inhabitants thanks to the relocations. The Luchon valley is losing inhabitants.

The Haute-Garonne department has four urban attraction areas, the center of which is in the department, out of the 75 in the Occitanie region. Either Toulouse, Revel, Saint-Gaudens and Bagnères-de-Luchon. These four areas are home to 1,357,469 Haut-Garonnais, or 98% of the inhabitants of the department. They all encroach on neighboring departments. The Toulouse area in particular spills over into Ariège, Aude, Gers, Tarn and Tarn-et-Garonne. About 56% of the inhabitants of the Haut-Garonnaises areas live in one of the 22 towns belonging to a pole and 44% in one of the 471 suburbs.

Between 2013 and 2018, two of these four areas gained inhabitants. With a growth rate of + 1.3% per year, the Toulouse area is the most dynamic, that of Revel (+ 0.4%) being further behind. The population of the Saint-Gaudens area (+ 0.1%) is relatively stable, while that of Bagnères-de-Luchon is decreasing (- 0.7%).
