This Wednesday, November 20, children from municipal recreation centers will be celebrating International Children’s Rights Day in partnership with UNICEF.
This year, the work of the little Toulonnais focuses on the connection between generations through a photo exhibition. On the pictures, grimaces both children and old people.
Every year, Toulon children are enrolled in leisure centers to celebrate International Children’s Rights Day. This Wednesday, November 20, the children of 5 of these structures (Le Clos Olive, Strassel, Saint-Dominique, Brusquet and Les OEillets) will participate in an inclusive and intergenerational presentation on the universal theme of grimaces. On this project, 3 residences for elderly people dependent on them (EHPAD) came (Saint-Maur, Bastide-Bonnetières and l’Amirauté). The goal of this day is many. If his goal is to raise children’s awareness of their rights, he also aims to strengthen the relationship between different generations by creating a time of sharing and encouraging living together.
Before this day, the educators took pictures of the children making faces. Also related are old people with their most beautiful pot. The grimace shows appearance by highlighting the ideas of laughter, joy, sharing or inclusion. All the pictures will be displayed at the Honorable Town Hall around a wish tree where the little ones from Toulon will have the opportunity to hang their wishes for the children of the world. All these wishes will then be sent worldwide through the UNICEF network.
The second part of the presentation is more interactive. Gathered around tables, the children will question, in a fun way, children’s rights and values such as respect, justice, tolerance or words such as racism or disability.
Since 2014, Toulon has been named a Child Friendly City by UNICEF. The city is committed to respecting children’s rights: their voices and priorities are an integral part of public policies, decisions and programs. Among the main activities: the Children’s Words system. This action aims to encourage children’s participation in the life of reception structures. In total, 22 children, representatives and substitutes, are chosen by their classmates for a mandate that lasts throughout the school year. It is the duty of these representatives to collect the words of the small inhabitants of Toulon who are registered every Wednesday in the leisure centers and to give their opinions on different subjects. Through regular exchanges with elected officials from the town council, they plan and implement projects on environmental protection, solidarity or heritage. The aim of this system is to introduce children aged 6 – 11 to democracy, to promote citizenship and the participation of young people in the life of the town.
Children’s representatives from municipal recreation centers will present their projects to Toulon’s elected officials, including:
• Valérie Mondone, deputy mayor in charge of the Family Centre
• Catherine Trioulaire, UNICEF representative.
