TOULON: A united city and friend of the elderly

Toulon, an age-friendly city, pays particular attention to its seniors.

Those over 60 represent 28% of the population. Also, since 2001, many actions have been put in place, in particular via the Senior activities service to promote their inclusion in local life. This service, which takes care of the distribution of Christmas parcels for our most modest seniors, offers them information, listening, entertainment, culture, travel and many other activities. He also coordinates the twenty or so retiree clubs in the city.

This service relies on the Communal Center for Social Action (CCAS), a real linchpin and essential partner in solidarity with the elderly or the most vulnerable. The CCAS accompanies this public on a daily basis for the constitution of files, the provision of financial support, the granting of heating vouchers or the home service. For example, nearly 100,000 meals a year are brought home.

Through its local information and coordination center (CLIC), the CCAS maintains and updates the register of vulnerable people. The purpose of this register is to locate these Toulon residents as well as possible and to provide them, if necessary, with help from the health and social services under the best possible conditions. This registration is free, voluntary and can be done throughout the year.

The autonomous residences of Porphyre, Port-Marchand, Ressence and the accommodation establishment for dependent elderly people (EHPAD) Le Saphir complete this support system and welcome elderly people in excellent conditions.

For the next five years, the City’s ambition is to strengthen social ties by supporting the development of local solidarity and by promoting intergenerational relations through playful or more educational activities. Since 2016, many workshops have been conducted by the House of Student and Youth Information (MDEIJ) and the Seniors Animation department. They should soon be supplemented by the development of a new project aimed at combating the digital divide which affects many elderly people. Carried out by students, these IT skills transmission actions will help the oldest in their administrative procedures while offering these young people valuable professional experience on a CV.
