A tough Japanese woman, even at many, many years old!
The ambitious wife of John Lennon – Yoko Ono, although already 91, led and won a court case and was able to prove that an extremely expensive watch of her murdered legend husband was hers, and not an Italian collector who bought it years ago.
The Swiss Federal Supreme Court rejected an appeal by the collector – an Italian living in China who bought the extremely expensive item at auction.
Yoko Ono gave John a Patek Philippe watch valued at $4.51 million. USD in 1980, celebrate his last, fateful 40th birthday. The back is engraved with a love message commissioned by her. Two months later, Lennon was assassinated in New York.
Decades later, the watch turned up at an auction house in Germany. The collector bought it there, but when he asked to have it appraised in Geneva in 2014, Yoko Ono understood.
The Italian wanted to keep the watch, claiming that he had acquired the valuable item in good faith. However, the Swiss courts are ruling against him, including today, as a last resort.
According to magistrates, a driver who worked for Yoko Ono stole the watch in 2006. What happened to the driver after the theft is not part of the legal proceedings in Switzerland, DPA notes.
The watch is currently in a safe in Geneva, according to court documents cited by Reuters. It is not yet clear whether it will be returned immediately to Lennon’s widow or if it will be returned at all, the news agency noted.
