The gold medal of suffering at the expense of thousands of visitors was deservedly won on Tuesday by the organizers of the Touching Ceremony of the Olympic Flame in Ancient Olympia before it was even lit for the Paris Olympiad!
Thousands of visitors from all European countries, including us, became victims of an unprecedented inconvenience in our attempt to approach the Ancient Stadium of Olympia to watch the Ceremony up close.
For the “protection” of the officials, the Police and the organizers forced thousands of visitors, among them, small children as well as people with mobility problems, to undergo an unprecedented “caption” and walk for about two kilometers around the perimeter of the stadium, at the foot of it Kroniu Lofos, on a rugged in many places narrow road to reach the Ancient Stadium.
Herds with small children in the stroller or holding them in their arms were forced to walk under the sun on the rough path to reach their destination. In fact, some of them were forced to turn back.
Strong police forces prevented, without any justification, the visitors who arrived early in the city of Ancient Olympia from following the route they followed in previous years, while mainly only the Greek visitors were checked, in contrast to the foreigners who passed without any problems.
One of the comic-tragic elements of the suffering and bad organization was the demand of the organizers from the visitors entering the Stadium not to bring coffee cups with them but only a bottle of water!
Ilios journalist Andreas Kapogiannis, commenting on the unacceptable image, speaks of “stupidity of the Security Authorities who forced people to take the mountains and not the normal main road of Ancient Olympia which had been blocked by police forces…”
Mr. Capoyiannis complains that a girl probably from France who was leaning on crutches, was forced to follow the route of the rough road. But at some point he couldn’t stand it, tripped and fell to the ground.
The specific images that embarrass our country internationally were recorded by the visitors in videos and photographs.
