Tottenham’s surprising decision against Yves Bissouma, filmed taking drugs

Tottenham have taken the decision to suspend Yves Bissouma for one match, coach Ange Postecoglou announced on Thursday. The sanction follows the release of a video in which the Malian midfielder is shown inhaling nitrous oxide, a “laughing gas” known for its psychoactive effects.

An undisputed starter for the “Spurs” after playing for Lille and Brighton, Bissouma will be absent for the first match of the Premier League season against Leicester, scheduled for Monday. “We have decided to suspend him for Monday’s match,” Postecoglou said at a press conference, deploring the “regrettable decision” of his player.

Since 2023, possession of nitrous oxide for recreational purposes has been illegal in the United Kingdom, punishable by up to two years in prison. The 27-year-old apologized for this “flagrant lack of judgment” in a statement.

“He has to regain my trust and that of the group,” Postecoglou said on Thursday, specifying that the door nevertheless remained “open” for the Malian international. “We can help him understand that his choices have repercussions on the whole team,” he added.
