Tottenham’s credentials as one of the best four teams were affected after the poor performance against Brighton.
Late goals from Argentine Alejo Véliz and Ben Davies made the scoreline look more respectable for the visitors, but they were still beaten at the Amex Stadium by a team that is without 10 players due to injuries.
Jack Hinshelwood opened the scoring in the 11th minute and João Pedro converted a penalty in the 23rd after Dejan Kulusevski brought down Danny Welbeck in the area.
Brazilian Richarlison had a goal disallowed and hit the crossbar before halftime for Tottenham. Ecuadorian Pervis Estupiñán made it 3-0 with a 25-meter shot in the 63rd minute.
João Pedro scored his second goal of the match – again from a penalty – in the 75th after a foul by Argentine Giovani Lo Celso on Evan Ferguson.
“All teams are strong in the Premier League, and if we don’t play like the last 15 minutes of every game we are going to have problems,” said Arsenal captain Son Heung-min. “This has to be a sign to wake up.”
Tottenham remained in fifth place, one point behind City, which is fourth.
