Antonio Conte was recently introduced as the new Tottenham manager after firing Nuno Espirito Santo. On Thursday, the Italian led his new club for the first time in the Europa Conference League match at home against Dutch Vitesse. Then Spurs offered a real head start.
Heung-Min Son put it 1-0 after 14 minutes in a tangled situation where the ball ended up with the South Korean who pushed the ball into the net. Lucas Moura added 2-0 eight minutes later when he got an open street and easily rolled the ball into the net.
A deadly own goal from the Dane Jacob Rasmussen in Vitesse then extended Tottenham’s lead to 3-0 before the match was even half an hour old. Rasmussen, however, took quick revenge on himself when he nodded a ball into the right cage to 3-1 shortly afterwards – and then Vitesse reduced once again through Matus Bero to 3-2.
It got even worse for Tottenham when midfielder Cristian Romero pulled down an oncoming Lois Openda in midfield and received his second yellow card of the match. Spurs were thus down to ten men with half an hour left.
Ten minutes before full time, Vitesse also lost a player when Danilho Doekhi tore down Harry Kane and received his second yellow card. Shortly afterwards, the next expulsion came when Vitesse’s goalkeeper Markus Schubert stopped a ball with his arm and received a direct red card.
Tottenham then held off and won 3-2, which means that the London club got past Vitesse and is the new second in the group behind Rennes.
