Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham Hotspur are still ahead but believes the club need a striker who suits their style of play.
Tottenham have made two signings so far this summer, with 18-year-old midfielders Archie Gray and Lucas Bergwall agreeing to join the club from Leeds United and Djurgarden respectively in February. Spurs have also agreed to sign South Korean winger Yang Min-hyuk, who will join the club in January.
However, Postecoglou’s side have not signed any senior strikers since Harry Kane left for Bayern Munich last August. In the 2023/24 season, Son Heung-min and Richarlison were Tottenham’s main options.
“Last year we had to be a bit more creative, that’s right,” Postecoglou said of the striker position. “If Harry had stayed, I would definitely have used him!
“I think the most important thing for us is the type of striker we have. You know we play a certain way. We demand certain things from a physical point of view, from a technical point of view, that it is a striker who fits that mould.
“It’s still a garden area, when I talk about the team at the moment, we’re really the thinnest, so obviously it’s a focus for us.”

The signings of Young, Gray and Bergwall point to a clear plan: Spurs are investing in the future
Tottenham signed Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig in January, but the German played most of his minutes on the left. The loan deal was extended for next season in May.
Dane Scarlett also featured for Spurs in pre-season. The 20-year-old spent the first half of last season on loan at Ipswich Town but failed to score in 12 Championship games before being recalled. Will Lankshire, the 19-year-old academy striker, was also impressive.

Spurs want a strong No.8, but it may be time to widen the search
“It’s a difficult time,” Postecoglou said of the transfer window. “This is the part of the season where I probably have the least control over decisions and I’ve learned to stay disciplined and make sure we do what we set out to do. We have two young lads (Gray and Bergvall), but I think there was an increase from the other lads last year, which naturally makes us stronger this year.
“Obviously, we’re still in that window, but I think we’re going to get out of that window. When I took over, it wasn’t just around the edges, it was a big shift from what I was thinking in the pre-election season last year; I think 50 percent of the people who were on that trip are not here now.
“We’ve done a lot already and we don’t need to do much, but I still think it’s not just a one-year success. What you’re trying to build is another era of success and I think it’s going to take a little bit more.”
Tottenham will kick off their 2024/25 Premier League campaign at Leicester City on August 19.
