LONDON (AP) – Tottenham signed central defender Cristian Romero from Atalanta on Friday, two weeks after taking over the services of Pierluigi Gollini, who was a goalkeeper for the same Italian club.
–
The English Premier League team did not provide details on the hiring, including the length of the contract with the 23-year-old Argentine defender, who just made his debut for his country.
–
Romero won the award for “best defense” last season in Serie A and excelled in the Copa América, where Argentina claimed its first relevant international title since 1993.
–
The Córdoba-born defender made 42 appearances for Atalanta, including seven in the Champions League.
–
Romero’s arrival follows the departure of 32-year-old center-back Toby Alderweireld, who played six seasons for the North London team, where he arrived last month from Qatar’s Al-Duhail.
–
Gollini went on a one-season loan with an option to buy. The 26-year-old goalkeeper would compete with Frenchman Hugo Lloris for the title.
–
The 34-year-old Lloris has stopped with Tottenham since the 2012-13 campaign, but his contract expires in June.
