Tottenham Hotspur lost 1-3 to Brentford in Week 37 of the Premier League. These results make them now threatened with absent in European competition next season.
Playing at home, Saturday (20/5/2023), Harry Kane brought the hosts ahead in the 8th minute via a free kick, but Brentford got up in the second half.
Two goals from Bryan Mbeumo in the 50th and 62nd minutes and Yoane Wissa’s shot in the 88th minute ensured that Tottenham suffered a third defeat in the last four matches. The Spurs are now stuck in seventh place in the standings with 57 points.
Meanwhile, Brentford remains in ninth place with 56 points. Even though it’s tough, the hope of qualifying for the Europa Conference League is still open because now they are sticking to their city rivals.

The course of the match
Tottenham opened the scoring in the 8th minute. Frank Onyeka’s violation of Oliver Skipp resulted in a free kick.
Dejan Kulusevski, who was the executor, gave a short pass to Harry Kane, and the 29-year-old striker finished with a hard shot into the right corner of the Brentford goal guarded by David Raya. Tottenham lead 1-0.
Son Heung-min almost added to Tottenham’s advantage in the 11th minute, but his left-footed shot was saved by Raya. In the 24th minute, Emerson Royal’s header from close range was blocked by Rico Henry on the visitors’ goal line.
Brentford tried to provide resistance through Bryan Mbeumo’s header in the 29th minute, but missed the target. In the 35th minute, Vitaly Janelt’s long-range shot also failed to lead to the goal.
Tottenham again got a good chance through Arnaut Danjuma’s header which met Son’s pass, but the ball went wide to the right side of Brentford’s goal. Score 1-0 lasted until halftime.
In the second half, Brentford managed to get up and turn things around. Through an attack in the 50th minute, Yoane Wissa fed Mbeumo who was on the edge of the penalty box on the right.
The Cameroon striker calmly dribbled into the penalty box and then fired a shot through the gaps between the two Tottenham defenders which led to a goal, changing the score to 1-1.
Brentford turned ahead in the 62nd minute through a counter attack. Aaron Hickey’s through ball from the left flank was successfully received by Mbeumo in the penalty box and then finished with a shot into the left corner of the goal, beating goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
Tottenham tried to equalize the score, but conceded again in the 88th minute. Oliver Skipp lost control of the ball in front of the Tottenham penalty box, then Mbeumo took advantage of the blunder by directly feeding Yoane Wissa.
The 26-year-old striker mercilessly punished Tottenham with a low shot that made Forster’s net vibrate for the third time. The 3-1 score for Brentford lasted until it was over.
