Tottenham fans are as furious at the emergence of Gennaro Gattuo as their main managerial target as the Italian was during an infamous sideline fight in 2011.
Gattuso strangled Joe Jordan, Harry Redknapp’s assistant manager, when tempers flared during a Champions League clash, and for a time he was public enemy number one for Spurs fans.
Now the combative former AC Milan midfielder is the leading candidate to take over at Tottenham after a deal for Paulo Fonseca collapsed.

Gattuso had left Napoli at the end of the season and became Fiorentina’s new boss, but left after just 23 days following a disagreement over transfer plans.
Now the Spurs want him, but there seems to be almost unanimous disapproval among fans.
Many were quick to reference the Jordan incident with many jokes that the 69-year-old Scotsman would be an unlikely assistant to Gattuso in North London.
“I think Gattuso with the return of Joe Jordan as an assistant could be a total box office,” wrote one.
While another posted: ‘Gattuso always has a special love for Spurs’, with the image of the Italian strangling Jordan.
Others lamented the fact that there appears to be a lack of coherent strategy to bring in a replacement manager for José Mourinho, who was fired before the end of last season.

“Gennaro Gattuso is now the number one target for the manager,” wrote one. ‘The same Gennaro Gattuso who has just left Fiorentina’s post after 22 days due to disagreements on transfer strategies between him, Jorge Mendes and the board.
Another wrote: ‘Gattuso is as defensive as he sounds, he doesn’t fit in in any shape or form and has just quit a job after 22 days due to the transfer policy.
“It’s the most ridiculous and incompetent date possible, so of course it will happen.”

Paulo Fonseca had been the favorite to take over but the talks broke down between both parties
–
Spurs initially wanted to bring back former boss Mauricio Pochettino, but the Argentine will remain at PSG. Then Antonio Conte was the first option, but those talks broke down, as did the negotiations with Fonseca, the man replaced by Mourinho in Roma.
Daniel Levy is desperate to name a new manager, but it is proving difficult for the president to make the appointment.
Judging from the backlash of Gattuso’s emergence as the new favorite, the response will be even harsher if the 43-year-old gets the job.
