Tottenham continued its rocket launch, after achieving its eighth victory this season out of 10 matches, to hold on to the top of the English Football League, after defeating its host Crystal Palace 2-1, in the opening of the tenth stage competitions on Friday.
The London club won with a goal scored by Joel Ward, an accidental goal against his team (53), before Korean Heung-Min Son added the second (66), and Ghanaian Jordan Ayew reduced the score to the loser (94), and “Spurs” raised its score to 26 points, a difference of five. Points ahead of second Manchester City and third Arsenal, who are playing against Manchester United and Sheffield United respectively at this stage, while Crystal Palace occupies 11th place with 12 points.
This is the fourth win in a row for Tottenham, who can focus on the local league, in addition to the FA Cup, which starts next January, as he is not participating in any European competition this season.
No one expected Tottenham to sit at the top of the standings, especially after losing the best scorer in its history, Harry Kane, who moved to the ranks of German Bayern Munich at the end of the winter transfer market.
There was also a change in the technical staff, after the arrival of Australian coach Ange Postecoglou from Celtic.
The North London team has played 10 matches so far, winning 8 and drawing two, and is the only team that has not been defeated so far, along with its neighbor Arsenal.
Despite controlling possession in the first half, Tottenham struggled to pose a real threat to their opponent’s goal, and were content with two long shots, each from the Brazilian Richarlison and the brilliant James Maddison.
With friendly fire, Tottenham was able to break the scoring barrenness in the match, but credit also goes to Madison, who received a perfect cross from Senegalese Pape Sarr, and the former fired it powerfully, but it bounced back from Ward by mistake into his team’s goal (53).
Tottenham increased their lead with their first direct shot on goal in the match, through Son, following a series of wonderful collective passes between Tottenham players, after Maddison dribbled past the Crystal Palace defenders, and passed to the advancing “substitute” Brennan Johnson, and the latter transferred it to Son, who did not hesitate to pass. Follow it into the goal «66».
Son, who inherited the captain’s armband from Kane, continued his brilliance, scoring his eighth goal in 10 matches so far.
Ayew scored an honorable goal for Crystal Palace in the fourth minute of stoppage time, following a shot from inside the area, to impose some exciting minutes late in the match, but Tottenham held on to their lead to emerge with the three points.
