Toto Wolff denies “strategic involvement” at Aston Martin

(Motorsport-Total.com) – In a newspaper interview, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff denied speculation that he could invest as an investor in the British sports car manufacturer Aston Martin. He will “not become CEO of Aston Martin”, the Austrian repeated in an interview with the daily newspaper “Austria” – and excluded a “strategic investment as an investor”.

Wolff denies the rumors about his person, not least supported by research from ‘Motorsport-Total.com’: “I am and will remain the head of Mercedes Motorsport and Formula 1 boss.” At least “in the short term” nothing will change, he emphasizes – without explicitly excluding a personal financial investment at Aston Martin.

Wolff was “somewhat surprised by the changes that have taken place over the winter and by the behavior of individuals”. Whom he means specifically, he leaves uncommented. Mercedes had previously said through ‘Sky’ that certain journalists let themselves be exploited by others and disseminate false information.

What Wolff confirms very clearly is his current status: “My participation in Mercedes is upright, my contract runs until the end of 2020, and we are still in good discussions about what we want to do together. We are discussing.” The corona virus pandemic currently has “bigger problems” to be solved than that.

What Wolff does not deny is his relationship with Lawrence Stroll (“a good friend for many years”), who joined Aston Martin together with business partners as a shareholder and took over the leadership as CEO. “People added up one and one and made three out of it,” says the Mercedes team boss.

Daimler CEO Ola Källenius is similarly vague about Mercedes remaining as a factory team in Formula 1. Negotiations on a new Concorde Agreement, he reveals in an interview with ‘Autocar’, have not yet been completed. But: “Formula 1,” emphasizes Källenius, “remains a very, very attractive arena for us.”
