The Netherlands has existed since 1581, when the declaration of independence was signed. Since then, 59,148,187 people have lived in our country. That writes the magazine Quest History, after research by the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute.
Because a number of estimates and assumptions have been made in the study, the scientists prefer to stick to “about 59 million” rather than the exact number.
Uncrowded
More than a quarter of the total number of Dutch people is still alive, the researchers say in Quest. In the first centuries, the current Netherlands with 1 to 2 million inhabitants was still very sparsely populated.
The population has grown rapidly since 1800: from approximately 2 million to more than 17.4 million in September of this year.
