Total Lunar Eclipse Doesn’t Trigger Earthquakes

Jakarta, IDN Times – Head of the Climate Change Information Center of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dodo Gunawan said that the total lunar eclipse that occurred on Wednesday, May 26 will not trigger an earthquake. A lunar eclipse, he said, only affects the tides.

“Events on earth that are directly related to the moon are the gravitational force that affects the tides of the sea. Earthquakes are not physically related to the moon,” said Dodo to IDN Times, Monday (31/5/2021).

The Head of BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation, Daryono, said that the total lunar eclipse did not cause an earthquake. According to him, if there was an earthquake after the lunar eclipse, it would just be a coincidence.

“Several cases of earthquakes that occur at full moon are just coincidences and empirical evidence is still difficult to find,” Daryono said IDN Times, Monday.
