“Total lack of credibility of the list”: Alain Kestemont leaves DéFI and supports the PS mayor in Anderlecht

Designated as the head of the DéFI list last January for the municipal elections in Anderlecht, alderman Alain Kestemont finally announced in July that he would not run in October “so as not to serve one term too many. From CPAS Councillor to Municipal and Police Councillor and then to Alderman, not to mention the many ministerial offices and party presidents, more than 40 years of politics serving the people of Brussels in general and the people of Anderlecht in particular. A new generation must now take over!”

This Thursday, he announced on Facebook and in the pages of La Capitale that he was leaving his party and supporting the list of socialist mayor Fabrice Cumps. “The total lack of credibility of the list that DéFI, the party that I served for nearly 20 years, including more than a decade on the Municipal Council, the Police Council and the College of Mayor and Aldermen, is presenting in October leads me not to support it as an outgoing Alderman or to call for a vote for its candidates. Consequently, I am leaving DéFI today,” he explained, adding that I am “as of today giving my support to our Mayor Fabrice Cumps and to my Alderman friends Fabienne Miroir and Guy Wilmart and to the list that they will present for the elections next October.”

“The party no longer represents anything in Anderlecht. We lost more than 6% of votes in the municipality in the last regional elections. I am extremely disappointed with François De Smet’s presidency and his management of the party,” he told La Capitale.

Alain Kestemont is also acting mayor of Anderlecht until August 15 in the absence of Fabrice Cumps.
