torrential rains flood the streets and enter some homes in Sitges – Diario La Página –

DANA is losing strength in Spain, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), but this Sunday there are still regions that are on red alert and that are leaving impressive images with flooded streets and homes full of water. In the afternoon, these scenes occurred mainly in Sitges, Catalonia, where a storm released between 50 and 90 liters of water, causing flooding in several streets, especially in the Terramar area.

The westernmost neighborhoods of the town were the most affected. According to official data, in Sant Pere de Ribes 65 liters were recorded, while in Vilanova i la Geltrú the rainfall ranged between 30 and 55 liters.

The Generalitat Firefighters received around 30 warnings since 4:00 p.m. in the Garraf region, mainly due to flooding in basements and garages, as well as accumulations of water on public roads. In Sitges, a vehicle was trapped under the Navarra Avenue bridge, although its occupants were unharmed.

The meteorological situation has led Civil Protection to extend the alerts to the Garraf and Alt Penedès regions, despite the fact that they were not initially on alert. This change is due to the evolution of the climate and the proximity of the telephone antennas that sent the message to these areas.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, as torrential rains could persist, further affecting local communities. Citizens are recommended to stay informed and follow the instructions of the authorities to ensure their safety.

Renfe suspends trains
Due to the storm, the Renfe company will stop providing service on the Regional services in southern Catalonia and the Avant train that connects Barcelona with Tortosa (Tarragona) until 3:00 p.m. tomorrow, Monday, due to the forecast of intense and potentially torrential rains in that territory.

The company has announced in a statement that, in coordination with the Operational Coordination Center of Catalonia (CECAT) of the Department of the Interior of the Generalitat, it has agreed on these services “to guarantee the safety of all travelers” given the weather conditions.

For their part, the UGT and CCOO unions have issued a joint statement this Sunday in which they ask citizens of southern Catalonia to avoid traveling due to the forecast of heavy rains in that territory and that only the emergency services and security, according to the EFE Agency.

The emergency coordination center of the Generalitat, given the weather forecast scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, has agreed to suspend classes and reduce mobility between midnight today and noon tomorrow Monday in the regions of Montsià, Baix Ebre , Terra Alta, Ribera d’Ebre, Tarragonès, Priorat, Baix Camp, Alt Camp and Baix Penedès.

The unions affirm in their statement that “adverse meteorological phenomena require prevention by administrations and companies to guarantee the lives of workers.” “We ask companies for responsibility in these times we live in,” add CCOO and UGT, recalling the warnings launched by the Meteocat service.

The “final fireworks”
The intense rains have forced the Catalan Generalitat to decree the closure of schools and universities for tomorrow and restrict circulation in nine southern regions, where health and care activity will also be at a minimum, trials have been suspended and teleworking is requested.

While waiting for the weather to improve in the afternoon, the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) predicts for tomorrow, Monday, moderate precipitation in the form of showers in coastal and pre-coastal points, especially in the south, where “locally it will be strong and , even occasionally torrential, until noon.”

The Catalan Government recommends teleworking to all workers who are not essential services because “extreme precautions must be taken” in the face of the “final fireworks” of the dana in Catalonia.
