A significant downpour fell tonight and early in the morning in the Empordà and has left shocking images in Cadaqués. The water has come down the stream of this Catalan town with such force that it has swept away a total of 32 cars, as explained by the mayor of the municipality, Pia Serinyana. Many of these vehicles have been stranded on the bridge in front of the town’s Casino.
Some users have shared videos on social networks in which they can see the force with which the water comes down from the stream and how it carries away some of the cars in the area.
No injuries
The downpours have not caused any injuries
Serinyana explained in RAC1 that, although “it hasn’t rained that much in the town, the river – which runs through the town – has become very full and has swept away the cars that had been parked on the promenade.”
The problem is that these cars have ended up causing a blockage on the bridge and water has begun to accumulate on the town’s promenade. “Our center has been flooded,” said Serinyana, who added that “there is only material damage” and ruled out any injuries.
It is not the first time that the stream floods as it passes through Cadaqués. Middle-aged neighbors claim to have witnessed situations like this twenty times, although they had never before seen such an accumulation of affected vehicles.
The point where the affected cars were parked is the stream itself, which most of the time is completely dry. “It has been parked there all its life, for at least 40 or 50 years,” says a neighbor. A parking lot that warns motorists of the danger of floods.
Downpours in several municipalities of Empordà
Municipalities such as Port de la Selva, Garriguella and Verges have exceeded 100 liters per square meter
Not only has Cadaqués suffered the ravages of torrential rains. In several towns in Alt and Baix Empordà (Girona), intense rains occurred this Friday morning, which in some points exceeded 100 liters per square meter.
At around 4 hours, the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (SMC) has issued an observation warning for “accumulation of rain” in the north of the province, with showers that could exceed 100 liters in 24 hours, an episode that has been provided with a danger level of 3 out of 6, as indicated in ‘X’. In municipalities such as Port de la Selva, 117 l/m2 have fallen and in municipalities in the interior of Alt Empordà such as Garriguella, 106 l/m2.

At around 5:20 a.m., Meteocat warned that the precipitation has lost intensity and extent, although the rains continue to affect the Baix Empordà. Municipalities in this region such as Verges or La Tallada d’Empordà have also registered significant accumulations, with 112 l/m2 and 98 l/m2 respectively.
It had been a long time since it had rained so intensely in the Cap de Creus area, which in the last three years had accumulated a rain deficit of 50%. In 2023, the Cadaqués meteorological station had added only 200 l/m2, records more typical of semi-desert climates such as Cabo de Gata or Morocco. A water stress that took its toll on the vegetation and fauna of the area.
