Toronto Maple Leafs’ Epic Comeback from 0-5 Deficit Against Columbus Blue Jackets

Updated 07.23 | Published 06.23

NEW YORK. Wildest match of the year?

Well, when the third period started, Toronto was surprisingly down 5-0 against Columbus – and when it was over it was 5-5.

– What we said in the last break? That we know we can score five goals, says goal scorer William Nylander after what ended up being a disgraceful overtime loss.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have had a lot of muscle for them in recent years, but the first two periods against the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight probably take the prize.

They didn’t seem to care a bit and ended up in a 0-5 deficit at home – against the Columbus Blue Jackets, second jumbo in the Eastern NHL conference.

So the blue and white stars were also thoroughly booed when they stepped off the ice for the final break.

– There was a lot that was not acceptable tonight, but we tried to maintain a positive attitude and the guys still have to be credited for pulling themselves together in that last break and then going out and giving it everything they had, says coach Sheldon Keefe.

They really did. William Nylander reduced it after only 38 seconds and then goals followed from Mitch Marner, Jake McCabe, Auston Matthews and Auston Matthews again – with 45 seconds left.

So what the hell did they say to each other in the locker room?

– That we know we can score five goals, says “Lill-Nyllet” with a wry smile.

In the end, however, it was still a loss, because three and a half minutes into the incredibly action-packed overtime, Kent Johnson still managed to save the guests from total humiliation with the 6-5 pearl in the net behind Ilia Samsonov.

– When there’s extra time I’m just excited, I forget about the third period and try to get the job done and it was fantastic that we managed to win, says the hero.

William Nylander also had an assist – just like William Lagesson – and has now again scored in seven games in a row.
