Toronto FC suffer 3-0 defeat against New York Red Bulls in MLS match

Toronto FC suffered a 3-0 defeat on the road against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena Field on Saturday night.

A high-tempo start saw both Toronto FC and New York Red Bulls create clear goal-scoring chances in the opening half of this Eastern Conference MLS match-up. The first opportunity of the game fell to TFC when Federico Bernardeschi spotted Jonathan Osorio with an excellent through ball pass in behind the New York Red Bulls defence on the break. Osorio would go on to register the first shot on target of the match with a right-footed attempt on goal, which New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel saved. The opening half transitioned from offence to defence for the Reds amidst heavy pressure from the hosts. In the 23rd minute, TFC goalkeeper Luka Gavran stood tall to deny New York Red Bulls midfielder Frankie Amaya’s right-footed shot from the inner right side of the box. Just three minutes later, however the TFC goalkeeper leaped into action again. Luka Gavran made an exceptional acrobatic diving save to keep New York Red Bulls midfielder Omir Fernandez’s shot out of the bottom left corner of the TFC net in the 26th minute. TFC would find themselves creating chances on the counterattacks, but the final end product scoring option would prove to be elusive. Unfortunately for the Reds, New York Red Bulls would find the breakthrough goal at the very end of the half. Tom Barlow took advantage of a TFC misplay to score a tap-in for the lead in the 45th minute.

New York Red Bulls midfielder Luquinhas snagged a second-half brace with tidy goals in the 49th and 65th minutes respectively. Finding themselves down three goals on the road, the Reds made all five substitutions in an attempt to change the game’s momentum and pull a goal back. Unfortunately, even the introductions of Marshall-Rutty, Petretta, Mailula, Mbongue and Víctor Vázquez weren’t enough to shift momentum this time.

Toronto FC’s next match will be hosting Orlando City SC at BMO Field on Saturday, October 21st for their final match of the 2023 MLS regular season.
